EVERLASTING MOMENTS (M SUB) RUN: 1 HR 46 MIN
Now Showing…

Genre:
Drama
Director:           Jan Troell
Cast:                Maria Heiskanen, Mikael Persbrandt, Jesper Christensen,
Producer:          Thomas Stenderup
Screenplay:       Jan Troell and Agneta Ulfsater Troell
Music:              Matti Bye
Language:         Swedish
Country:            Sweden

Set in Sweden in the early 1900s. In a time of social change and unrest, war and poverty, a young working class woman, Maria (Maria Heiskanen), wins a camera in a lottery. The decision to keep it alters her whole life. The camera grants Maria new eyes with which to see the world, and brings the charming photographer "Piff Paff Puff" into her life. Trouble ensues when Maria's alcoholic, womanising husband, feels threatened by the young man and his wife's new-found outlook on life.  Based on a true story.

“I've always loved Jan Troell's films. I mean, he started in the 60s and I guess most famously he made those two great films about Swedish immigration to America, THE IMMIGRANTS and A NEW LAND, in the early '70s. As you say, he's in his late seventies now and this is a film where he looks at a member of his wife's family, of her ancestors if you like, in fairly recent Scandinavian history and it encompasses so many things. Not only the situation of this woman, the role of women at that time in society, the way that they had to live with husbands who were often extremely unsympathetic and unfeeling, but it also looks beyond that, I think, at the origins of the socialist movement in Sweden. There's that wonderful scene, apparently an authentic scene, where the three kings of the three Scandinavian countries...
Sweden, Norway and Denmark meet in Malma to....to keep Sweden and Scandinavia out of the First World War… I love the way this intimate story is set against a historical background which impinges on the intimate story. I like this very, very much. I think the performances are beautiful. I'm giving it four out of five.” DAVID STRATTON – AT THE MOVIES

A romantic coming-of-age tale set in the art deco glory of 1930s New York City, ME AND ORSON WELLES is a celebration of love, theatre and the passions that inspire greatness.

17-year-old student Richard (Zac Efron) spends his days fantasising of the bright lights of Broadway. When he bumps into members of the Mercury Theatre company, a new acting troupe headed by then-unknown 22-yearold Orson Welles (in an extraordinary, award-wining performance by newcomer Christian McKay), and is given a small role in a visionary staging of Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’, Richard’s dreams are closer to becoming reality.

Richard is taught the ropes by a beautiful, ambitious production assistant, Sonja (Claire Danes), and he quickly falls head over heels in love. However, he has to concentrate on his role in the play and not challenge the charismatic-but-sometimes-cruel Orson Welles, who won’t have anyone stand in the way of his astonishing artistic vision. The stage is set for behind-the-scenes adventures bound to change everyone’s lives, and help create one of the 20th century’s artistic giants.

A moving story about love, life and the beauty of unexpected friendships.

Renée is the concierge of a grand Parisian apartment building, who meets with society’s expectations of what a concierge should be; reliable though totally uncultured. But beneath this façade lies the real Renée: passionate about culture and the arts, and more knowledgeable in many ways than her employers, with their outwardly successful but emotionally void lives.

Meanwhile, several floors up, eleven-year-old Paloma Josse is determined to avoid the pampered and vacuous future laid out for her, and in an effort to show how absurd her life is decides to film the people around her. But unknown to them both, a sudden acquaintance with their elegant and enigmatic new neighbour, Mr Ozu, will change their lives forever.

“There is a fairytale quality to the story that Achache brings out: it is as if the apartment block, whose spaces and elements are vividly depicted, becomes some kind of enchanted tower, within which transformation is possible.” PHILLIPA HAWKER THE AGE AUSTRALIA

“The Most Dangerous Man in America” catapults us to 1971 where we find America in the grip of a familiar scenario: a dirty war based on lies.  And Dr. Daniel Ellsberg, one of the nation’s leading war planners, has the documents to prove it.  Armed with 7000 pages of Top Secret documents; he leaks the truth about the Vietnam War to The New York Times and risks life in prison to end the war he helped plan.  It is a story that held the world in its grip, with daily headlines, the top story on the nightly news for weeks on end.

What makes a dedicated Cold Warrior throw away his high-level access, his career, his friends, and risk life in prison for a mere CHANCE at helping to end the war?  The Daniel Ellsberg in the first part of the film is a brilliant, complex man wrestling with his conscience over his role in a war he sees first as a problem to be solved, then as a hopeless stalemate, finally as a crime to be stopped at any costs.

Ellsberg’s leak of the top-secret Pentagon Papers to The New York Times sets into motion an extraordinary series of events.  The Nixon Administration first goes after the nation’s press, resulting in a First Amendment battle that, within two weeks, ends up in the Supreme Court.  Ellsberg goes underground to avoid a nationwide FBI manhunt.  When he emerges, he is hailed as a hero, accused of being a traitor, ostracized by friends, and finds himself on trial for his life.
