VAC International Media Group are proud to present The 1st China Australia International Film Festival, bringing Australia and China together through film.

Welcome to the 1st China Australia International Film Festival.
Opening night features a special performance by The Chinese National Museum of Ethnology plus a special screening of CZ12, also known as Chinese Zodiac, co-produced, written, directed by, and starring Jackie Chan.

For more than twenty years, Quan, an old Chinese farmer, has lived alone in Beijing where he moved to allow his son Kun to attend the university.  To honor the promise he made to his now deceased wife, he decides to make the long return journey from Beijing to his native village Yangshuo to bring back the bird  that has been his only companion during his years away from home. He is asked by his daughter-in-law Chan to take along his granddaughter Wei, an only child brought up in the lap of luxury. While grandfather and granddaughter set out on their journey – one travelling back in time, the other discovering her roots, Kun and Chan ponder the meaning of the life they have led in the sole pursuit of success and money.

One day they encounter  a couple who lost their child and who introduce Tian and Lu to a support group that is dedicated to locating missing children. They eventually find their long lost son, Peng, and return home.
Peng has changed. He sees them as strangers. The child is traumatized after being taken away from his ‘family’ for a second time. Meanwhile Peng’s foster mother from the village arrives in the city in search of her last surviving relative, exposing long buried secrets..

In 1985, three ambitious college students meet in Beijing. Meng Xiaojun (Deng Chao), Wang Yang (Tong Dawei), and Cheng Dongqing (Huang Xiaoming) come from different  backgrounds, but they all pin their fortunes on getting student visas for the United States. Only Xiaojun is successful. However, lacking perfect English, he is forced to support his study at Columbia University with debasing part-time jobs. Meanwhile, Yang and Dongqing keep working in Beijing, determined to develop the idea the trio hatched together: a new system for teaching English to the tens of millions of Chinese eager for the advantages fluency brings.

Set in Shanghai from 1935 to 1949, One Step Away is about the love affair between a communist spy Fu who was posing as a spy for the Kuomintang and a beautiful dance instructor Ning. Fu is operating undercover in a Kuomintang spy division commanded by Ji where Fu’s job is to torture prisoners. During a botched attempt to save his handler, Fu encounters Ning and later has to torture her to maintain his cover.  While keeping Ning under surveillance, the couple share their grief, dance the tango together and slowly fall in love. The invasion by the Japanese however threatens to draw them apart and Fu must place duty before love.
